ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Cultural myths and the media fuel and reinforce set ideas about roles and identities. As a culture we unite certain attributes of physical appearance with certain kinds of behavior. The pairing of these two factors often results in a ‘type’. The media’s influence in this dynamic emerges at the forefront because its imagery is heavily based on physical appearance. Viewers draw conclusions based on how appearance matches a pre-established role or idea about behavior. This series of work, titled stereo-types, questions the mental conclusions generated by physical appearances. The poses and body stance convey ideas of stubbornness, resolution, or action and the text sends a comment about the woman portrayed. The text comes from a variety of sources and examines the thoughts, prejudices, and expectations associated with appearances.
